L&M is a San Francisco Bay Area-based duo composed of Liam Herb (L) and Milo Moyer-Battick (M).
"Glass, Works!" is a three-part experiment in material-specific composition, musical games, and extended techniques.
Tuned wine and beer bottles blown as flutes and extended to their highest upper harmonic limits with fast airstreams and angled positioning. Crystal wine glasses are tuned and used for simple, process-based compositions, sometimes struck with mallets, rubbed with fingers, amplified through glass cutting boards, and fed back into themselves with walkie talkies and cell phones. Glass was thrown from the tops of dams and recorded and used both in unprocessed and resampled forms. Glass cutting boards are activated with contact microphones and used as conduits for other glass objects and as instruments played with the tips of fingers.
These are just a few of the sounds and techniques used in "Glass, Works!," an album that is just as much exploration in the collaborative spirit as it is in the material for which it is named.
"For me, every sound has its own minute form—is composed of small flashing rhythms, shifting tones, has momentum, comes, vanishes, [and] lives out its own structure." —Annea Lockwood (1970, from the liner notes for "The Glass World of Annea Lockwood." Tangent Records TGS 104)
